Happy November! – We’re back in session!

actingclass

Integrative Arts Studio is back in action!

First of all, I wanted to extend a big thank you to all who came out to our first class back last night. You did some beautiful work, and I’m excited to continue moving forward and challenging the class in new ways.

Now that Steve has moved on and I’m managing the class solo, I want to begin to do things a little differently to insure that the class is truly engaging and multidisciplinary.

We’re going to continue bringing in film cameras to do on-camera work each month. The videos will be posted privately on YouTube for all of our students to watch and study. I also want to start integrating themed classes into the schedule, so that we have a moving rotation of different work/scenes in class. For example, one Thursday might be cold-reading, duo scenes, improv, movement technique, or voice-over. The focus of class each week will rotate so that all of our students can challenge themselves to try new things and become really well-rounded performers.

I’m really looking forward to see what we can create together! Class resumes next Thursday, November 13th at 7:30pm.

-Alex

Acting for film is one of our specialities and it takes serious study to learn. While there are many techniques for achieving reality and excellence on film it is advantagious to know what the best actors think about the craft.

Here is a great article about the style of film acting taught by veteran movie star Michael Caine. Enjoy!

10 Lessons in Film Acting from Michael Caine

E.M. Taboada
How do you make sure you stay in frame and focus while performing?  What is the best way to work with off-camera actors while performing a close-up?  How can props like cigarettes become a major headache? Michael Caine answers these questions and more as part of a film acting workshop broadcast on the BBC.  You can watch the hour-long special in its entirety after the jump, along with 10 film acting lessons pulled from it — highly recommended for actors and non-actors alike!:

10 lessons I learned from Sir Michael Caine on film acting:

1) When speaking to an actor off-camera, look into one eye and stick with it.

2) Film acting is, in large part, reacting and listening.

3) While rehearsing something with a fellow actor, if a crew member can come up and recognize you’re rehearsing vs. having a real conversation, then you aren’t doing it right.

4) An actor relaxes in front of the camera by concentrating, and knowing that you have no enemies on set, everyone’s on your side and doing their best to make you look your best for the movie.

5) The camera catches everything you do, so don’t be afraid to play things subtley.

6) If you’re going to smoke on-screen, you must plan it absolutely perfectly, don’t mess up the continuity.

7) All actors steal certain gestures and behaviors from other actors — but the best actors make these gestures their own.  Steal from the best, and make it your own.

8) You can make four pictures as an actor in the time it takes a director to make one — so if you’re an actor planning on becoming a director, consider the financial aspect.

9) A majority of movie acting is relaxation.  If you’re knocking yourself out, you’re doing it wrong.

10) Theater acting is an operation with a scalpel, movie acting is an operation with a laser.

Acting class, film acting, agents……

MarilynMonroe_in_ActingClass

Acting class.

Where transformations happen.

How do I get into acting? How can I become an actor? How do I get an agent? How can I get into movies?

Well, you have to understand that it’s simple……but not easy. You have to be willing to give massive amounts of time and energy to the mission. You have to willing to work for nothing and hold lights and carry equipment over hills and in the snow. We can’t wait for someone to call us, we have to be willing to do more than the next artist.

The way in which you go about your preparations for a role must be excellent, thorough, and well constructed. That’s how you walk into a room prepared, unbeatable, ready.

more to come…….

The Top 25 Drama Schools in the World

Kevin Spacey Mask - H 2013
Courtesy of Julliard
Kevin Spacey gave mask class at Juilliard his full attention circa 1980.

New York’s Juilliard School leads the pack as The Hollywood Reporter ranks the programs where Meryl Streep, Jessica Chastain and Jon Krasinski learned the ropes.

This story first appeared in the June 7 issue of the Hollywood Reporter magazine.

1. The Juilliard School, NEW YORK CITY

Juilliard won’t mollycoddle you, but it may make you famous.Kevin Spacey — a 1981 alum — told a student group that he protested his tough treatment by a teacher who likened his voice to frayed rope. “She said, ‘You’re an idiot. Don’t you realize that I’m the hardest on you because I think you’re the most talented, but I also know you’re the laziest?’ And she was right.” Spacey got his act together at Juilliard, as did Girls‘ Adam Driver (who was prepared, as he’d already survived Marine boot camp). Graduates emerge with formidable language skills, script savvy and thick skins. Always a great launchpad, Juilliard just added a $10 million grant funding full tuition and stipends for top students.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Jessica Chastain, Laura Linney, Viola Davis, Patti LuPone, Kelsey Grammer, Robin Williams

2. Yale School of Drama, NEW HAVEN, CONN.

At Yale, students aren’t in an ivory tower; they’re at center stage of the national theater world, with a shot at movies and TV too. Since dean and artistic director James Bundy started in 2002, the Yale Rep has produced more than 20 premieres of original dramatic works, including two Pulitzer finalists. “They feel like an elite corps of acting engineers: precise, well-read and eerily calm,” says one Casting Society member. Adds Bundy, “You will see, for instance, that 13 Tony Award nominees this year are graduates of the school and/or current members of the faculty.”

NOTABLE ALUMS: Meryl Streep, Paul Newman, Sigourney Weaver, Angela Bassett, Patricia Clarkson, Frances McDormand, Paul Giamatti

3. Tisch School of the Arts, NYU NEW YORK CITY

Tisch’s BFA program got high marks from the CSA, and its MFAs are even more esteemed. Says CSA member Monika Mikkelsen, “They have a power city to draw from, an acting school, directors, writers and filmmaking programs, and students are well-rounded and clear on the very hard course of life they have chosen for themselves.” Felicity Huffman has said that if it weren’t for NYU, she might not have had a career.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Alec Baldwin, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Michael C. Hall, Jeremy Piven

4. Carnegie Mellon University, PITTSBURGH

Founded in 1914 — 10 years before Yale’s drama school — CMU has produced winners of six Oscars, 24 Tonys and 95 Emmys, including two for Ted Danson, who said, “I really do owe everything to Carnegie Mellon. It set the tone for my life. I love the process, and I learned to love the process here.”

NOTABLE ALUMS: Rob Marshall, Steven Bochco, Holly Hunter, Zachary Quinto

5. London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, LONDON

Open since 1861, LAMDA sends lots of grads across the pond — like Sherlock and Star Trek Into Darkness star Benedict Cumberbatch, who won Olivier, Evening Standard and Critics Circle awards in 2011 for Danny Boyle‘s Frankenstein.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Chris O’Dowd, John Lithgow, Jim Broadbent, Donald Sutherland

6. Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, LONDON

RADA doesn’t dump its students on the job market, it assigns each grad at least two RADA Buddies — pros with at least three years of experience — as mentors.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Clive Owen, Diana Rigg, Tom Wilkinson, Peter O’Toole, Anthony Hopkins

7. University of North Carolina School of the Arts, WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.

UNCSA accepts about 5 percent of applicants, and Matthew Weiner cast some of them in his first movie, You Are Here, made on the movie-lot-like campus in 2012. Alums got three 2012 Tony nominations, and new drama dean Carl Forsman — a Drama Desk and Obie winner — has big plans, including graduate showcases in New York and L.A. “Not a day goes by without our hearing about a drama alum who won a role in a film, on TV, at a regional theater or on Broadway,” says chancellorJohn Mauceri.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Mary-Louise Parker, Jada Pinkett Smith, Chris Parnell, Tom Hulce, Terrence Mann

8. National Institute of Dramatic Art, KENSINGTON, AUSTRALIA

Only 4 percent pass auditions and enter NIDA. “As things have gotten more international, I always make sure that I know about the graduating classes in Australia,” says CSA member Margery Simkin, who cast Pacific Rim.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Baz Luhrmann, Mel Gibson, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Judy Davis

9. Northwestern University, EVANSTON, ILL.

You know Lionel Logue, whose unorthodox methods of therapy were dramatized in The King’s Speech? He was trained at Northwestern. The school’s “Purple Mafia” includes the first female studio chief (Sherry Lansing), the first fictional female vice president (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), the second woman to win a directing Tony (Mary Zimmerman) and triple Oscar-nominated writer John Logan. (It also has a formal relationship with the Steppenwolf Theatre, which doesn’t hurt.)

NOTABLE ALUMS: Stephen Colbert, Warren Beatty

10. State University of New York, Purchase, PURCHASE, N.Y.

After four years, the cream of SUNY’s BFA actors get to audition for more than 300 agents, producers and casting directors in NYC and L.A. “The style these actors have is unique,” says Mikkelsen.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Melissa Leo, Edie Falco, Parker Posey, Stanley Tucci

11. The Actors Studio, Pace University, NEW YORK CITY

At the only drama school affiliated with the illustrious Actors Studio, students not only tread the boards in the footsteps of Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson, they study under faculty appointed by presidents Al PacinoHarvey Keitel and Ellen Burstyn. Plus, you can say you were “inside” the Actors Studio.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Chris Stack, Xanthe Elbrick

12. Guildhall School of Music & Drama, LONDON

Teeming with musical as well as theater prodigies, Guildhall has launched a skyful of stars. “I had a great time at Guildhall, and my training set me in really good stead as an actor,” says Ewan McGregor.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Eileen Atkins, Orlando Bloom, Michelle Dockery, Joseph Fiennes, George Martin

13. ACT, SAN FRANCISCO

The first time Annette Bening became a star was at ACT’s theater, which has earned a Tony and welcomed 7 million patrons. Its kids program produced Winona Ryder and Nicolas Cage.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Denzel Washington, Delroy Lindo

14. UC San Diego, SAN DIEGO

Sharing shops and staff with the Tony-winning La Jolla Playhouse, UCSD puts on 15 productions a year. There are 200 undergrads and 60 MFAs culled from 500 applicants.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Danny Bernstein, James Avery

[Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly listed Dana Ivey as an alum of UC San Diego. She is an alum of LAMDA.]

15. CalArts, VALENCIA, CALIF.

CalArts students benefit from proximity to L.A., a thriving film school and visiting artists such asElizabeth LeCompteMing Cho Lee and Taper Forum founder Gordon Davidson.

NOTABLE ALUMS: Alison Brie, Don Cheadle

Celebrities Hone Their Skills with Acting Lessons

Zack Mandell

Zack Mandell
When a person decides that he or she wants to be a doctor, he or she doesn’t just walk into a hospital and demand a job. Most jobs now require that people have the training and skills needed for the position. This type of training is no different for actors, because actors who have formal training typically do better in their careers. Some of the top celebrities in the world took acting classes and lessons from world-famous acting studios and coaches. One of the most famous acting organizations is the Actors Studio in Manhattan. Elia Kazan, director of “East of Eden,” was one of the founding members. Numerous celebrities have studied at the studio, and many celebrities studied under Lee Strasberg. Those who watched “My Week With Marilyn” saw the character of Paula Strasberg. Paula worked directly with Marilyn Monroe as her personal coach. Monroe seldom worked on film sets without Paula or Lee by her side.In its heyday, dozens of actors poured through the doors of the Actors Studio. Some of its famous students in the 1950s and 1960s included James Dean, Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Hopper, Marlon Brando, and Rip Torn. The Actors Studio still exists today, and some modern celebrities have taken acting lessons there, including Bradley Cooper, Melissa Leo, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, and Sean Penn. Some actors prefer taking private lessons from coaches. Margie Haber uses a process called cold reading, which requires that actors read a script and get into the part without any preparation. Oscar winner Halle Berry took lessons from Haber. Heather Locklear and Brad Pitt are other celebrities that have used Haber in the past.Larry Moss studied under several famous acting coaches and later opened his own studio. Former student Helen Hunt even mentioned him in her speech after she won the Academy Award. Hunt’s ex-husband Hank Azaria attended classes with Moss. Other students of Moss include Jim Carey,Leonardo Di Caprio, Michael Clark Duncan, and Hilary Swank.Kathy Bates and Timothy Olyphant are two students who studied under William Esper. Esper studied with Stanford Meisner, who was an early proponent of method acting. Method acting refers to the process that teaches actors to become different characters. The actors immerse themselves in different roles, helping the actors prepare for a new role. Meisner himself worked with some famous faces over the years, including Jon Voight, Robert Duvall, Sandra Bullock, Grace Kelly, and Gregory Peck.Stella Adler was an actress for a number of years before she became an acting coach. Her school, The Stella Adler Academy of Acting, teaches the method process of acting. Adler worked directly with a number of actors over the years, and a former student now runs the school. Celebrities who attended the program include Benecio Del Toro, Robert De Niro, Selma Hayek, and Mark Ruffalo.

While many famous actors take acting lessons, just as many do not have any formal training. One example of a celebrity who never took lessons is Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg got his start as one of the founding members of the boy band New Kids on the Block. After leaving the group, he launched his own music career. Wahlberg transitioned into an acting career with roles in “The Big Hit,” “Shooter,” “The Lovely Bones,” and “The Fighter” without taking a single lesson.

Shia LaBoeuf is another Hollywood success story who became popular without taking lessons. LaBoeuf took his acting career into his own hands, calling agents and pretending that he had a new talent for them named Shia LaBoeuf. One agent took a chance on the unknown actor, and he landed roles in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” “Disturbia,” and “Eagle Eye.”

There are even more actors who honed their skills on the small screen before finding stardom. Demi Moore auditioned for a role on a soap opera in the early 1980s. After just a year on the soap opera, she left to work in Hollywood. Ricky Martin, Meg Ryan, Kevin Bacon, Christopher Reeve, and Tommy Lee Jones are just a few of the other actors who starred on soap operas before launching their careers.

For some actors, television shows serve as formal training for an acting career. The actors learn the skills they need to transition into a career on the big screen. Other celebrities get their start on stage, starring in plays and musicals before launching a movie career. For every well-known actor who takes lessons, there is at least one actor who has no type of formal training. Some actors simply have talent that takes them farther than training could.

Looking out from the other side of the Hollywood sign, we see hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses stretching out in every direction.

Los Angeles is a place where people come to lose their fear, recreate themselves, and be accepted for it.  Millions of people live here and everyone of them has a dream.

Until we start into action on a goal we are all in some sense, dreaming.  Some of us may be hiding out from what success may reveal to us. If we actually start to create the kind of art that makes us happy, shocks us out of our apathy,  raises the bar, that would mean that we have greatness. This is the kind of work that makes careers, the kind that matters, Personal work, great work.

Studying acting with a group of dedicated artists is a great way to stop hiding, stop dreaming and start creating.
